As part of Pebble Tossers' Teen Leadership Program, I became a part of a team of six volunteers working towards making a difference in the lives of youth. Unsure on how to start, we first began tutoring children in the Peachtree Corners area of Georgia. Our goal was to help underprivileged kids strengthen their reading and spelling skills. Many of them had limited access to structured academic support outside of school, yet they were curios and enthusiastic about learning. As the weeks went by, we wanted to do something that would celebrate their hard work and remind them how capable they truly are, which is how we thought of the idea of a community spelling bee.
Organizing the event took a lot of planning and collaboration, from creating word lists and arranging the space to promoting the event to families. In the end, all the effort was worth it. Over 30 children participated, each one smiling nervously and clutching their number cards. The excitement in the room was contagious and parents and volunteers cheered as students stepped up to the mic, proudly spelling out words they had practiced for weeks.
For many of the kids, it was their first time in a competition like this. Watching their faces light up after each correct word reminded me why educational access matters so much. Learning is all about confidence and the belief that success is within reach.
The spelling bee ended with applause and laughter. But what stayed with me most was the impact we had made that day: students said they wanted to keep studying new words, parents thanked us for believing in their children, and volunteer felt inspired to keep engaging in community service.
For me, this project was proof that when a community invests care and encouragement into its youth, education can empower.
